Annie Leibovitz: Artist Of The Week

Annie Leibovitz

1. How is the technical quality?
2. How’s the composition?
3. Does the photographer tell a story?
4. What do you find interesting about her work?

Elizabeth II, Buckingham Palace, London, March 28, 2007. Photograph by Annie Leibovitz.

  1.  The technical quality of the photograph is fantastic in this photo. She has the queen so focused, with the background blurry but not all the way so that it still looks visible to the person looking at it.

  2. The composition of the photo of Queen Elizabeth II has her standing off to the left, with possible lighting/dark clouds in the background with dead trees and a lake. It seems like Annie took the photo at an upward angle.

  3. I feel the photographer is trying to tell from the dark sense that is represented, that the queen holds the power. She shows her wearing black, not smiling and a dark background, so I feel that Annie was trying to show how the queen should look to others.

  4. I find it interesting that she chose to go so dark with this photo when many see the Queen as a friendly, but powerful person. I wonder how it would have looked if it was sunny outside and she was wearing white. Would it still have had the same outlook?

  1. She shows the fog to get the image of the castle in the background without it taking away from Cinderella. She shows focus on Cinderella and the missing shoe to get the main point across to the other people viewing.

  2. The composition of the photo of Cinderella has her running down the stairs when her shoe falls off. She has the dark castle in the background to show the fear she had when the clock was striking midnight and she had to run home.

  3. Her shoe falling off is a focal point in the story that she felt needed to be represented in that way. At this point in the story, she was feeling frightened and didn’t know what would happen if she didn’t rush home. The background (dark, scary, foggy, etc) shows that internal worry that she experienced, in the photo.

  4. I found it interesting that she represented the castle in that way when taking the photos. She has the castle shown in such a way that would incline every one to wonder why that castle looks and feels so ominous.
